WEIGHT
TRAINING EXERCISE FOR EVERYONE
Most people decide to
take up weight training exercise to improve their physical
appearance. Men and women can easily start
building muscle mass through weight training if done
correctly. (Although a lot depends on your genetics as to how
muscular you can become). But most women weight train to tone
their bodies and to help them slim down. Your metabolic rate
increases when your body starts gaining muscle mass,
which in turn helps with long term fat loss and stops the
dieters yo-yo effect. The metabolism is lifted for several
hours after weight training exercise which helps to burn
fat.
ITS NEVER TOO LATE TO
START
Good physical
fitness is important to everyone no matter what their age.
If an older person takes up weight training exercise , the
benefits can be substantial. Exercise helps to prevent the
loss of muscle tissue that makes people frail in old age.
Studies have been
done on people in their 70s, who were monitored for a number
of months while doing weight
training exercise. The results showed they
could gain muscle mass at a similar rate to people in their
30s.
Weight training
exercise has also been proven to help prevent osteoporosis,
improve levels of good cholesterol and cardiac
function.

TERMINOLOGY
Basically weight training
combines a number of elements:
REPS:short for repetitions, it is a single
cycle of lifting and lowering a weight to perform a
particular exercise.
SETS:A set is the number of reps performed one
after another without stopping. With the number of reps per
set and sets per exercise determined by the individuals
desired goal.
REP MAX:
The
number of reps a person can with perfect form for a given
exercise. eg. If a person can perform 10 reps at 50lbs their
rep max is 10 RM. Alternatively 1 RM is the maximum weight a
person can lift in perfect form for 1rep of a given
exercise.
TEMPO:
The
speed it takes to complete 1 rep of an exercise.
Increasing or decreasing the tempo of an exercise can
have a different effect on the muscle.
Beginners
usually start gaining muscle mass easily with a
basic workout concentrating on the major muscle
groups.
